Free Tutorial - English Paper Piecing Hexie Pincushion


Handwork is Restful and Compulsive...

Hexie Pincushions - nice little gifts and to preserve your precious pins, of course...
You need 8 papers, 8 pieces of fabric bigger than the papers, and two buttons. Hand sewing needle and thread, and a bit of stuffing (see note below...)

Cover eight hexie papers with assorted pretty fabrics; tack through the papers for best results. These are 1-inch sided hexies and make quite a small pincushion - scale up if desired
Sew 7 into a flower...

Fold back the edges like so and sew together. Set the last hexie into the space and sew, leaving one side open...

Take out the tackings and the papers

Turn the pincushion out the right way, pushing the corners gently into shape.
Stuff (I like to use oddments of knitting yarn or fleece - polyester will ping your pins back at you!) Walnut shells are good, too, or birdseed.
Finish by sewing two buttons from top to bottom in the middles of the centre hexies (see the top picture) and pulling quite tight, so that the finished item is nicely plump...
