Making a More Interesting Set of Shapes
For many years, I have loved the idea that EPP can be much more free-form than the usual tiled-hexagons - here's a pattern for you to make a roundel and a post-card sized boat. Here are the projects tacked and assembled and ready to make into new things - postcard sized (6 by 4 inches) projects like the boat are easy to devise for yourself and manageable to make - I designed and made these two in an evening...
Cut your pattern apart and lay it out more-or-less in order (tip: print a second copy on paper to lay the pieces out on) - here I am choosing fabrics from the scrap box...
Make sure you add the fabrics to the back of the papers so you can still see the numbers. The end results will be turned around - if you don't like this, add the numbers to the other side (use a red pen or something so you know which is which)
Most pieces are straight-forward to tack, but the inner curve on the sky part here needed some little snips to make it behave...
See above for the tacked and sewn-together boat card, and here it is, quilted, backed, and ready to post...
The Tree roundel is all made in Oakshott cotton fabrics and I applied it to a background square - this could be quilted and finished as a mini-quilt or you can make a few to make a bigger quilt - perhaps 6 in rainbow colours?
The paper templates can be re-used a few times before they get too soggy...
This is Golden Tree, a favourite (and long-since sold) piece. I made the patchwork panel by drawing slightly random hexies on a sheet of card and cutting them out one or two at a time, tacking and adding them back into the panel. I then applied it to a background and cut into it to make the tree. The decorations (French Knots) were fun and seemed to add "rivets" to the tortoise-like segments...
